NOlympics LA: People’s World Cup Program
________________________________________________________________________
NOlympics LA is a coalition of over 40 community organizations in Southern California that oppose LA’s plans to host the Olympics in 2028. The coalition’s concerns about the impacts of the Olympics — including displacement and gentrification, militarization and surveillance, the criminalization of informal economies, and the privatization of public space and resources, among others — apply to the World Cup, too.
In May 2026, NOlympics LA launched the “People’s World Cup Program,” explaining:
“NOlympics LA is curating a calendar of community events that collectively counterprogram the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Counterprogramming offers alternatives to dominant narratives and structures, encouraging urgent critiques of the status quo and insisting that another world is possible. An event’s inclusion on this list does not mean the event organizers endorse the People’s World Cup Program or NOlympics LA. Instead, we at NOlympics are highlighting events that we understand as challenging the commercialized, imperialist mega-event machine, whether they:
- protest FIFA and/or the World Cup hosts directly
- highlight the communities that are negatively impacted by mega-events, supporting and celebrating their struggles
- reclaim the world’s most popular sport for the people.”
We’re tracking and amplifying People’s World Cup Program events in the calendar below. Click on each calendar item for more information! We aim to keep the calendar as current as possible, but check out NOlympics LA’s website or Instagram for their latest updates.
